Fit Factor: What would you have in your dream gym?
In my teeny-tiny house, I don't have room for a dining room table, let alone a treadmill. But a girl can dream, right? With the fitness industry booming, it seems like there are so many cool gadgets to help whip you in to shape. And while I'm certain that there's no better place to get in shape than the outdoors, it's not always reasonable to get outside, especially when you are Canadian. So I sometimes find myself thinking of all the fabulous fitness equipment I would have if I had a) room for it, and b) loads of money that wasn't already allocated to bills.
So here's what I would have in my dream gym, in my dream house, if money wasn't an issue:
So here's what I would have in my dream gym, in my dream house, if money wasn't an issue:
- An Endless Pool: An endless pool is kind of like a treadmill of pool. You choose the speed you want to swim at, and the water is cycled through to create resistance against your strokes. Yeah, it's expensive, but we're not talking reality here. I think this would be an ideal way to workout, without the need to do that pesky 'tunraround' thing once you reach the end of the pool. Also? I wouldn't be subjected to the moritfacation of wearing my bathing suit at the gym. Of course, if money wasn't an issue, I'd also get a hot tub to soothe sore post-workout muscles. And maybe a personal masseuse too.
- Treadwall: Climbing is a great way to get fit and improve balance and endurance. And while the same old climbing wall every day can get a bit boring, here's a solution: the Treadwall. Again, it's a take on the treadmill, but this time the climbing wall moves under you and you have to scramble to stay up.
- Trampoline: Call me a kid at heart but I love jumping on the trampoline. Possibly more than any other exercise-type movement. Maybe it's leftover angst from my mom not allowing us to have one in our huge yard as a kid. But regardless, jumping on the trampoline is a great workout and it burns lots of calories -- all while you're having fun! Heck, maybe I'd throw in one of those harness things that gymnast use to perfect their flips.
- Pilates Machines: I've been doing Pilates for years and I saw on an episode of Oprah that lady O does it too. But while I'm content doing the 100 from my hot-pink mat, Oprah just had to show me up by using some fancy shmancy Pilates Machine and now I feel like I'm not doing it right, like I need the machine to be a real Pilates girl. So if I had an extra $3000, I would get the pilates machine
- Normal gym-type stuff: If I didn't at least have a selection of weights and cardio machines, it wouldn't be so much a gym as it would be Martha's Playroom. So I'll take ... lets see .... and elliptical trainer (maybe one of those ones with a built-in video game), a selection of weights, some resistance bands, an exercise ball, a balance cushion, a yoga mat, some yoga blocks and a really good stereo.
