Safer cigarettes? FDA may soon regulate the industry

Posted on Jul 16th 2007 3:30PM by Bethany Sanders
A bill is expected to pass through the Senate today that would put regulation of the tobacco industry into the hands of the FDA -- something the tobacco companies and the FDA aren't sure they want. The new legislation would require cigarette makers to follow regulated guidelines (if the FDA created them) in creating new products and some could one day lead to a "safer" cigarette -- one with lower levels of nicotine and toxins.

Though no one expects that health problems associated with cigarettes will be cut dramatically if the FDA gets put in charge, some groups think that just limiting the way cigarettes are marketed will have a dramatic impact on how and when people start and quit smoking.

The FDA is concerned about the move, because their job, they say, is to make sure that products are safe to use before being available to consumers. Even "safer" cigarettes would never truly be safe, so it puts them in an awkward position.

Interesting development...what do you think?
