The benefits of ballet: Yet another dance to help you get fit

It's no surprise that not everyone enjoys working out. While an exercise like jogging or swimming may be fun to some, others only drag themselves to the gym because they know that it's good for them. That's why it's good to remember that, while more traditional gym-based work-outs and classes are good for getting fit, they're not the only answer.

Dancing as an alternative form of fitness has been a hot topic around here lately with blogs about Dancing with the Stars (Fitz), Burlesque (Jessica), Belly Dancing (Me) and Strippercize, Capoeira and more (Martha) getting some coverage. The latest dance getting attention for its many body benefits is ballet. I know what I picture of when I think of ballet is tiny, young women with amazing balance, not my own slightly-clumsy and somewhat-round self. But everybody has got to start somewhere right?

So what is to be gained from ballet? Well, while it's not as strong a cardio work-out as something like running, all of those precise movements do get the heart pumping. It's great for balance and, perhaps the biggest benefit, is the incredible amount of toning that comes with all of those elegant poses. You've got to keep your muscles engaged making them both stronger and more lean. According to this article, additional benefits include increased flexibility, great posture and, after some hard work, extra confidence in your body. So if you love to dance, now is as good a time as any to give ballet a try.
