Jordin Sparks angers National Action Against Obesity
While browsing my celebrity gossip sites this morning, I came across this video from Fox News regarding American Idol and Jordin Sparks. Now, I don't watch American Idol and don't know Jordin Sparks from a hole in the wall but I looked up her pictures and she is really cute.
But while I see cute, Meme Roth from the National Action Against Obesity sees, in her words, "diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol...a picture of UNhealth." I am pretty appalled by her remarks, as Jordin is 17 and what appears to be a healthy weight. She's also a real person with feelings and a role model for many young girls who may be on the verge of developing eating disorders after such careless remarks. American Idol is, at far as I know, a show about vocal talent, not body size. You can watch any of the thousand sitcoms on TV to see examples of TV flaunting unhealthy body sizes. Furthermore, I think the appeal of the show is that it features real people with real struggles. Having some stick figure berate her on national television is not going help Jordin develop a comfortable body image that she needs to be healthy and well-rounded.
Am I over-reacting or does this rile you up too?

I'm totally with you on this.
Obesity is a real problem, but this girl does not seem anywhere near obese. (Plus, I always hear that TV adds at least 10 or so pounds to a person's apparent weight, making everyone look a little chunkier).
I wonder why this "Meme" woman would be doing her cause, (which seems like a legitimate one), such a disservice? From what you've said, she sounds like a nutball.
I have to confess I didn't click on the link to Fox news 'cause I hate them, so I may be jumping to conclusions.
(Crabby has her own grouchy health & fitness site at http://crankyfitness.blogspot.com/ when she's not hanging out at Thatsfit).

Meme Roth clearly has some type of psychological disorder. She is an outright bigot. How can you issue an opinion on a person’s medical condition by looking at them. Resist the Cult of the emaciated!

I wrote this directly to Natioal Action Against Obesity:
Please learn the meaning of the word obesity before you have Meme Roth go on national TV and criticize a young lady for being unhealthy. There are enough problems with young women driven to eating disorders by such ridiculous statements as those made by Ms. Roth that we do not need her contribution to it.
Perhaps she should stick to targeting people who truly are obese instead of targeting a teenager who is clearly not. A person who may need or may not need to lose a few pounds does not qualify as obese and one does not need to be a size 0 or a stick figure such as Ms. Roth in order to be healthy.
Now, thanks to Ms. Roth, hundreds of impressionable young women are getting the signal that someone of Jordin Sparks size is considered obese, in a society where what is defined as healthy and beautiful has increasingly grown smaller in the waistline. It was refreshing for our society to see real people of different sizes on a national TV show, instead of a bevvy of size 0 unreal looking models that have created the distortion with weight prevelant among teens, and Ms. Roth ruined a positive possible trend.
If you define Jordin Sparks size as obese, then i sincerely have to question Ms. Roth's diagnostic skills and what this organization is about.

I've never posted here before, but I was really taken aback by this whole story. Jordin may not have a "skin and bones" body type, but I never thought of her as overweight, let alone obese. To hear Meme going on about how her winning will inspire other teens to become obese, all I could think was....huh?? If I'd never seen Jordin, I'd have imagined she was 300 pounds or something. (And even if she had been, the remarks would have been unkind and I don't think an overweight person winning American Idol would somehow contribute to teenage obesity...it's a singing competition, the best singer should win, period!)
Anyway, it just seemed like a really cruel thing to publicly say about a 17 year old girl who is probably already overwhelmed with everything that has happened to her in the last few months. Meme's remarks are more likely to push Jordin (and other girls) towards eating disorders than to inspire sensible healthy eating among teens. At one point in the interview she said the question of whether Jordin was "obese" was between her and her doctor. Exactly! So why go on national TV and speculate on her level of health? Is she a medical doctor who has personally examined Jordin? What evidence does she have that Jordin is a "picture of unhealth"?

Check out what the real experts say about girls with Jordin's curves. Your WAIST-HIP RATIO says more about your health than how large you are:
"Waist-hip ratio best measure of heart attack risk":
http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2005/11/03/waist-hip051103.html
"Diabetes risk - waist size better predictor than BMI":
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=21444
"Big bottoms may come out tops for women's health":
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4155/is_20010606/ai_n13908522
You can find more with a Google search for
"Waist-hip ratio should replace BMI to measure fatness"
Researchers have known about this stuff for ages. So it is mind-boggling an organization called "National Action Against Obesity" is so badly informed.

It's obvious that Meme is not thinking clearly.
She says that if Jordin wins, she will lose about
forty pounds. Ok, then, shouldn't she hope that she does
win so that she loses the weight and become "healthy".
Also, when american idols do win and lose weight, in order to set a good example for others, they should
lose in order to feel and be and look healthy, not because
the "world" requires it.
