Go fish! Try canned varieties for a quick, tasty meal

Once a year, for about a month, my local grocer carries incredible tasting, wild-caught sockeye salmon fillets for a price that doesn't make me wince. I load up on it while it's here, but once my freezer is empty I go back to hunting for salmon that doesn't cost me a fortune.

I've never tried canned salmon, but this article makes me wonder if I should. Fish like salmon and tuna are chock full of omega-3s, which can lower inflammation and are good for your heart. And according to this article, when fish is packed in water, the rich oils in the fish stay intact throughout the canning process. (Fish packed in oil, however, may not.) Not only that, there are some varieties out there that are line caught, meaning that fisherman can choose smaller fish who will have lower levels of PCBs.

Canned foods can contain added salt or preservatives, so if these kinds of ingredients concern you, check food labels before buying. What do you think -- when it comes to flavor and texture, can canned salmon compare with fresh or frozen? This inquiring mind wants to know!
