Children from low-income families not getting enough sleep

Posted on May 3rd 2007 9:00AM by Bethany Sanders
We've been talking a lot about sleep lately. Those nightly zzzzs have been proven to be crucial to memory and performance, as well as emotional and physical health.

But a recent study found that children who come from low-income families are less likely to be getting a good night's rest than their middle-class peers. The research, which involved 64 children from inner-city neighborhoods, found that incidences of sleep disturbances like night awakenings, night terrors, problems like sleep apnea, and resistance to bedtime were 25% higher incidence among low-income children.

Obviously this is a small study and it doesn't really explain why children from low-income families aren't getting enough rest. But because sleep issues can affect school grades, behavior, and physical and mental health, finding a solution to sleep problems is important for everyone.
