Tips for sustainable tourism

Trekking across different countries, exploring the intricacies of cultures that are different from your own is the favourite pastime of many, myself included. The tourism industry is huge and for many developing countries, their main source of income. But the sad truth is, tourism is hard on the world, and the more we uncover, the more we damage. So many people are looking for that spot in the world that is truly unique, untouched by the western world, but those places are disappearing fast. I learned this especially on a recent trip to the Great Barrier Reef, which dies a little bit with every tourist boat that crosses it. And on hikes in different countries, I always seem to come across an errant coke can, which never fails to appall me.

If you're travelling, it's important to take steps to protect the environment -- otherwise these places that are so gorgeous won't be around much longer. Gap Adventures, a great company that offers lots of eco-friendly trips, offers these easy tips for sustainable tourism.
