School food and drink slowly getting better
Are you concerned about what your school-age kids may be eating at school? Many parents are, and the focus on trying to make sure young ones eat right at school has seen renewed focus in the last year I think.I'm not sure providing caffeine-filled drinks as all that great an idea when kids are expected to be paying attention in class, but I digress. Some experts believe that healthier food and drinks are slowly finding their way into U.S. school lunchrooms. I just hope that finding has a hint of truth to it.
Most likely, the impetus for this stems from the fact that 17% of Americans between the ages of 2 and 19 are overweight. That's 12 million kids folks. The fight to get healthier foods into schools all the time is worth it, right?

I say they should bring their own lunch. Ever since I started 5th grade I decided the food was nasty and everyday someone found something that made it seem like it wasn't "homemade" or it was processed or something weird. Taking sandwiches (turkey) and tea or soda (yeah it's not the healthiest) chips and some sort of snack beats their pizza with fake cheese. I am glad they are trying to incorporate healthy food, just make it taste good too.

Can we really trust the beverage industry to provide our kids with less lethal food and drink in school?
Remember light cigarettes? We thought they were better too!
What we need in schools is more fresh fruits and veggies, make them plentiful and affordable! The food bill is the farm bill and this year, it's up for renewal. It affects everyone that eats! Change the farm subsidies and encourage small family farms to sustainably grow more veggies, then you'll see a real change for the better!
