Are you too manly to see the doctor?
Categories: Men's Health
Ok, guys. How many of you think seeing a doctor is a sign of weakness? Let me guess -- you figured you'd just "walk it off" instead.
We may not like to admit it, but many men actively avoid seeing a physician -- whether it's for an actual health problem, or just for our regular check-up. A more pressing issue, however, is how this mentality affects teenagers, as a recent study finds that young men 15 to 19 are particularly likely feel too "manly" to schedule a doctor's visit.
What makes matters worse, is that this is an especially important time for young people to be seeing their doctors. Not only are these appointments important for routine healthcare, but it's normally when they're immunized against conditions like tetanus and hepatitis B, and screened for sexually transmitted diseases.
If you have a teen who won't see his doctor, you might be able to change their behavior simply by talking with them. The study finds that father in particular can help alter their sons' opinions about healthcare -- demonstrating by example that talking about your health and seeking help for problems is part of being a man.
