Teflon cookware -- dangerous or not?

I've seen this off and on for a few years and have finally done a proper amount of research on the possibility of dangerous carcinogens being released when cooking on Teflon surfaces. These surfaces are now on most cheaper and mid-level cookware and make it very easy to cook without food sticking or burning to the cookware itself. But, is it safe?
Mercola's site, which generally backs up its claims with verifiable facts, claims that Teflon-coated cookware should be thrown out in favor of the plain old iron skillet or newer ceramic cookware. Have you changed from Teflon cookware recently when preparing those healthy and nutritious meals? If so, I am curious to hear from you in comments.
