Teens changing from illicit drugs to prescription ones

Posted on Feb 15th 2007 9:11AM by Brian White
Changes in the way some kids get their drug fix has caused some experts to start looking at ways to prevent teens from getting their hands on prescription drugs. It's unfortunately pretty easy, as many of them don't even have to leave the house.

While some estimates peg that overall marijuana usage is decreasing, the use of prescription drugs as being abused is holding steady -- or even increasing.

Finding prescription drugs is not even that hard -- open a medicine cabinet, buy them from friends and even pay folks to go to the doctor in order to get a prescription for a painkiller -- and those all regularly happen most likely. Of concern here is the estimate of teens abusing prescription drugs -- 2.1 million as of 2005 according to estimates.
