Nutrisystem: a great concept

Have you seen those Nutrisystem advertisements on TV recently? That system, which looks rather good in many respects, appeals to the side of you that wants to have perfectly-proportioned meals supplied that will give you nutrition while shedding pounds over time.

The meals look sensible (except for Sucralose being used at will) and the system is a great alternative for those that don't have the time to prepare a complete nutritional menu each and every day.

The company's financials haven't been so good lately, but I still believe, from what I've researched at their website, that the Nutrisystem system is a good one. What do you think?

My hubby and I did NS for 2 months...we got a jumpstart on weight loss, it's easy but the food is just so-so...I got tired of the taste...kinda like chefboyardee pasta...

Nutrisystem is based on sound science and the glycemic index diet (New Glucose Reovlution, Sugar Busters, South Beach Diet et al) has helped me drop 40 lbs in 6 months and reduce my insulin resistance.
HOWEVER Nutrisystem as a company is awful. Their food is disgusting. They don't tell you that you have to provide vegetables and fruits so the food cost doesn't break down very well. People have made a huge number of complaints to various message boards and such about Nutrisystem "replacing" their favorite meals with substitutions and those are normally things that are not that popular. If you love burgers and get 10 packets of chipped corned beef instead would you be happy?

Anyone can do a GI diet. Get a good book with the glycemic index of a lot of foods. Don't buy or eat anything with a GI over 55. Comprise 60% of your diet from low GI foods and 40% from Medium GI foods. Anything with a GI over 55 is too much.

Never eat anything with high fructose cornsyrup in it.
NEver eat anything that has a "Refined" or "Enriched" in the list of ingredients. NEVER eat white bread. You'll start dropping the lbs.

I lost 40 pounds on NS, but the some of the food is barely edible. I just had to find the things I liked and stuck with them for a few months. You are required to buy fruits, veggies, and dairy products. It does teach you portion control and forces you to eat a lot more fruits and vegetables than most people eat. It worked for me, but so would almost any healthy diet that cuts your calories down to around 1500 per day. In the end it's just convenience food.

That link says everything I could say and so much more. From the first time I saw those commercials, I knew it was a deceptive diet plan, more-so than the usual you see on TV.

Thanks Timothy -- great website you sent there! I reserved my opinion in the post originally (note: I used the term "concept" for a reason), and I was wanting to hear about NutriSystem from actual customers. Boy, did I see a "mouthful" over at Consumer Affairs!
