Juice fast diets: The real deal or just hype?
The claims of juice fast diets are hard to resist, and I admit to having tried one or two over the years. But are the claims true? Even when fortified with extra vitamins and nutrients, can having nothing but juice and water for days on end really be a good idea?
According to doctors, not really. If you're perfectly healthy a short-term juice fast won't hurt you, but other than helping you temporarily shed some water it won't really help you either. And if you stay on a juice fast for an extended period of time your body will use muscle, and eventually vital organs like your heart and your brain, to fill in the nutritional gaps.
Wow, that's scary. I don't want to weigh less because my brain got smaller.

Juice fasts are stupid. You miss out on all the fibre and the concentrated sugar from these fruits spikes your insulin.

I think fasting is good for us...but more short term than long term. I am thinking maybe 1-3 days, depending upon the person and how much "fat" they have to do the fast.
There is another consideration. Too much juicing can be weakening for those with that kind of constitution. Most Americans have too much "build up" of strengthening foods, such as meat. They can withstand juicing better than the person who eats no meat or eats a lot of vegetables already. That person can fast, but needs to do a less cleansing fast...something like a steamed veggie fast.
Also, we need to keep in mind the seasons. Juice fasting in a cold climate is rough on the body. It makes it very hard for your body to stay warm and function in cold weather. It's excellent for summer, though. In the winter, I would suggest cleansing soup fasts...like vegetable or miso soups. You still cleanse, but you keep your warmth and your health at the same time.
That is my only complaint about a "one size fits all" fasting. I don't feel it applies to all bodies.
I have an ex bf who fasts 1 month at a time. He gets real skinny. I think he goes too far. It hasn't improved his personality or heart/mind much, either. He not kinder or sweeter at all.
