Living with kids increases the fat in your diet
Categories: Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
A new study shows that having children in your home could be hurting your diet, if you're not careful. I think everyone would agree that most "kid friendly" kitchens are stocked with things like hot dogs, mac and cheese, and Oreo cookies. Having these things around makes it easier for the adults in the house to eat them also, not to mention families with young children make more visits to fast food restaurants. One researcher was quoted as saying "Adults pick up foods the kids want, so the kids end up driving the nutrition habits of the household instead of parents." According to the study adults living with children eat an average of 5 more grams of fat per day than someone who doesn't have kids around. That's equal to an extra personal-size pizza each week!

the qualifying statement of "if you're careful" is the whole point. i had a home daycare and got really fat. yup, i ate junk high in fat, salt and sugar. then i changed my diet, taught the kids how to enjoy nutrient rich, low fat/sodium/sugar foods, and now we're all in good shape. i lost 78 lbs, kept it off for 9 years so far, and now that my kids are teens they are actually capable of knowing what foods are going to be the best nutrition for them, and that's what they choose to eat! rather than eating "kid food" i created food for kids that i could safely eat too. took some work, but the payoffs were great! it's all about awareness... i suggest everyone watch "supersize me" at least once.
