Heart surgery drugs gets new warning from the FDA

The FDA last week released a stronger "black box" warning on labeling for Trasylol -- an injectable drug given to patients before undergoing heart surgery.

"Black Box" warnings are the strongest warnings to doctors and patients and basically state that there may be certain complications when using a certain drug that has one of these labels.

It seems rarely a day goes by that there is not a prescription drug or a surgery drug without a long list of side effects -- many of which are manageable to a degree.

But with Trasylol, the medication has been associated with serious kidney damage and an increased risk of death, congestive heart failure and strokes -- so the FDA is also limiting its approved use. That's quite a nasty list of warnings.
