Bird flu disappearance baffles authorities
It seems like 2005 was full of news concerning the coming global catastrophe known as the bird flu (H5N1 virus was the actual name). In Europe, citizens in many countries were fearful for their health and ton of precautions were taken. The H5N1 virus appeared to have come from Southeast Asia and was striking birds in places as diverse as Germany, Egypt, and Nigeria.
In short, global health authorities were quite concerned that a global pandemic was about to erupt. All of a sudden, the number of cases dropped sharply and it seemed like the H5N1 virus just "went away". What happened? A possible explanation is temperature seasonality. 2007 will test this theory, though.
