We could all use more sunshine

Recent research shows that we could all use a little more Vitamin D, the vitamin you can get merely by soaking up some sun. Even though this wonder-nutrient keeps bones strong, wards off diabetes, and protects against tuberculosis, cancer, colds, and the flu, most people aren't getting nearly enough of it.
Not surprisingly, most people run short on D during the winter months. But also, because most of us don't spend much time outdoors, and food sources such as milk and salmon contain only small amounts, chances are, you're lacking D all year round. This is especially true given recent research, which leads experts to believe the guidelines for Vitamin D consumption (which we're already not meeting) are too low.
Vitamin D is most commonly thought of as contributing to bone health, but researchers have recently learned that the nutrient helps boost the immune system, and can slow tumor growth (amongst other benefits).
While current government standards suggest at daily max of 2,000 IUs (international units), researchers instead suggest setting that as your target. Beyond sunshine, you can also try finding your D in milk, tuna, fortified orange juice, or dietary supplements.
