Jamba Juice warns of deadly bacteria in strawberry smoothies
The trendy juice bar/restaurant Jamba Juice Company is warning consumers in the Southwest today that some of its smoothies that contained strawberries may have been contaminated with a potentially deadly bacterium. Uh-oh -- this is not good news.Jamba Juice issued the warning with the FDA yesterday, and it applies to smoothies sold at Jamba Juice stores in Arizona, southern Nevada and Southern California from November 25 to December 1, although Jamba Juice said that it had not received any reports of confirmed illnesses. Being a customer of Jamba Juice every once in a while, this was quite a concern for a while today.
Jamba Juice issued the warning yesterday after one of its suppliers said frozen strawberries from one of its facilities tested positive for Listeriamonocytogenes (commonly known as "listeria") -- which is a cause of food poisoning and can even cause fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems.
