Even modest weight loss has benefits

Posted on Dec 4th 2006 9:20AM by Rigel Celeste

The results of a new study done in Italy suggest that even modest weight loss in older women can result in significant health benefits, such as improved body fat distribution and reduced risk of diabetes. This is important news because there has been a general consensus that due to muscle loss as people age, older individuals may be better off being slightly heavier. This study contradicts that commonly held theory, as the patients studied did not lose any high-quality muscle as part of their total weight loss.

Also, it's good news for people struggling with weight loss plans -- if you're having trouble meeting your long-term goal you can take some encouragement that, in the meantime, your body will start to see health benefits once you've lost as little as 5% of your body weight. Every little bit does count!
