New edible fruit coating kills ecoli bacteria

Researchers are working on a new coating for fruit that will both kill ecoli bacteria and also boost flavor. Sounds a little scary right? Surprisingly, the coating is made from apple puree and oregano oil. The oregano oil is naturally antibacterial, while the apple puree's sticky quality help it stay affixed to the fruit longer. Personally, I'd rather have my fruit with no coating at all. But if safety concerns are going to force us into having some kind of wrap or coating on all fruit in the future, I'm glad there are some non-chemical options being explored. The only thing that worries me is the statement that this new coating gives fruit a "flavor boost." When I eat fruit I'd like to just taste the fruit I'm eating, not some flavor that's enhanced by a coating of other fruits and herbs.
