Proposal for tax on soft drinks?

The AMA has recently rejected a proposal to tax soft drinks. The idea was the result of efforts to get a handle on the rising incidents of obesity across the country, and prompted by the fact that soft drinks are the #1 source of calories and account for as much as 7% of the American diet. It also seemed focused on getting sugary drinks out of schools.
Although the tax plan wasn't accepted, the AMA has approved efforts for a broader approach to fighting the obesity epidemic. There are some, however, who insist that the idea of a federal tax of soft drinks isn't dead yet.
I do think something needs to be done about the obesity problems across America, but I don't think taxing my occasional Dr Pepper is the answer.
