New contact lenses may check blood sugar levels for diabetics

A new generation of contact lenses is on its way, and they'll be doing a lot more than correcting our vision. Dr. Chris Geddes from University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute is creating contact lenses with sensor spots in them that change color as the wearer's glucose level changes. With these new glucose-monitoring contacts, the wearer would have a small translucent dot on the left side of their visual field. The dot would change colors if glucose levels became dangerously high or low. To determine their current levels, a person would simply hold up a color test strip and compare it to the color of the dot in their visual field.
It's currently still in the testing stages, but if this product become available to the public, it will mean no more endless finger pricking for millions of diabetics.
