Does our hair need filtered water?
Categories: Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health
When I heard about this product, my first reaction was to laugh. That was, until a few seconds later, when I realized that not only did I want one but also that it actually makes a lot of sense. The Beauty Water Shower Purification System is water filter that installs onto your shower head. Invented by celebrity stylist Jonathan Antin, its creation came from a place of pure vanity - Jonathan is known for asking clients to shampoo their hair using bottled spring water the day before a big shoot in order to look their best. But I say this product has bigger and better uses than just making your hair look better.
We're concerned enough about the chlorine, metals, and other chemicals in our water to filter it before drinking it. It makes sense that we'd take steps to control the amounts of those same substances that we expose our skin and hair to (and also the skin and hair of our kids)! I just wish the name was something that sounded less like a late-night infomercial product.

Your post title led me to believe that you would be examining whether hair actually benefits from using filtered water or not, but the post had nothing to do with the title. Feels pretty misleading.

TrainingTime, thanks for pointing that out. When I titled the post, I was referring to my original reaction to this product - which is being marketed as something your hair needs. But I can definitely see your point, and I apologize for any confusion.

From the title you would think this was some kind of legit info about hair, but instead it's nothing more than a rip off ad!! I mean god must have forsaken people living before junk like this existed. You can bet your shower bonnet brigitte dale either owns stock in the company, gets paid by the company, or owns a business that sells the crap! Aol is just as bad for allowing this to happen all the time. Now, with that off my mind I'll go get another beer, pet the dog, kick the wife in the butt and tell her to get out there and shovel the driveway! I don't want to track snow into my new pickup.

How about using distilled water for your hair and also for your coffee pots that tend to build up with mineral deposits.

After washing my hair for 2 weeks using warmed creek water during a trip to Africa in 1999 there was a noticable very positive difference in the quality of my hair when I returned home. I assumed that it was due a lifetime of chlorine buildup that I had gradually washed away during the trip. I immediately called our plumber to install a filter on the waterline to my showerhead. I change it every 6 months.
Both of my children were competitive swimmers and the buildup from the chlorine in the pool water had always been a problem ... it never occured to me that the amount of chlorine in the local tapwater could also pose a similar problem over time. I have been a proponent of filtered water for over 25 years and am glad that the science is now being applied to showers and baths since our skin is the largest organ we have and it is exposed to multiple sources of pollution daily.

Your hair, when you can actually see it, is DEAD. It is a string of protien. It is not LIVING. Why try to feed it with silly vitamins and filtered water? Get a life, people! If you want to protect it then keep the sun's rays off it.

What about the endocrine disrupters in every commercial shampoo? You know, the ones from the chemical surfactants and chemical detergents that are included in even "organic" Shampoos. Does it filter them? The water treatment plants sure don't take care of them. They just recycle from one shower to the next. That's why male fish are now laying eggs and human infertility is getting common. Does the filter help there?

You would not be feeding your hair with filtered water. You would be trying to reduce the build up of minerals on your hair. That is what chlorine (a mineral) does; creates a coating on each hair shaft that sometimes makes hair look greenish. Minerals can be stripped from your hair by using a clarifying shampoo. I would imagine not having the minerals there in the first place, ie: using filtered water, would be ideal. BTW, I do have a life... it includes communication with my hairstylist.

Why can't people just save jugs of water and then use it later on to shampoo their hair? Wouldn't that be cheaper???

We have had the filters for a year. Our skin is smoother and our hair is more managable. Our "heels' aren't hard like they were before the filters. Also, the filters need replacing every 6 months. MAbout the time it was needing replaced, my wife's sinuses flared up. As soon as we ereplaced the filter, that went away. We are sold on Aquasana.

To the nay-sayer, I say that I have hard water, and a problem with chlorine. A water filter for my shower is something I've been seeking for a long time. I have an alergy to hard water, and chlorine is bad for people. Think of it this way...Chlorine's purpose is to kill living organisms, and humans happen to be living organisms.
$95 is well worth not getting hives every time I take a shower, or being exposed to more chlorine.
And yes, hair is made up of dead skin cell, but it is also made up of protiens. And chlorine in regular shower water can do a lot of damage. Filtering out that chlorine would make hair look better.

I have hard water where I live...I went on a cruise and I would guess that on the boat they use some sort of filtered device. My hair hasn't been so beautiful in I don't know how long. My hair was soft, silky & shiny without using any products. Usually I have to use a straightner, and silk shine product. Do I have to buy something for my house?!

The post's title IS misleading & as a professional hairstylist for 17 years, I have never heard of the benefits or drawbacks of using tap water on one's hair. If we, as humans, didn't destroy everything we touch (such as the environment) we wouldn't need contraptions like this.
Just an opinion. I'm entitled.

Or hey, here's another idea... If you can't afford this gizmo, and all the replacement filters, just wash you hair normally, except once in awhile substitute in place of your regular shampoo that stuff that removes calcium, lime and rust from your shower door, toilet, etc.

Afew months ago my stylist had to cut off about 6 inches of my hair because of the chemicals in my water......Needless to say, I now only use bottled or filtered tap water when washing my hair, It certainly DOES make a difference!
