One Small Step: Sit up straight
One Small Step is our attempt to show you all how easy it can be to improve your health, and the health of the planet. Each week, we'll take one more little step and encourage you to take it with us. In honor of this week, I'll commit to:
Improving Posture:
Yeah, I know. We've all been told by our mothers hundreds of times to sit up straight and stop slouching, but how many of us actually listened? I know I often find myself slouched over the computer or lounging with back bent across the couch. But good posture is important. Not only can it make you look thinner and more confident, it can help keep your spine in good health for years to come. Check out this article for more information. It has great suggestions on improving your posture at work, when sleeping, etc.
Are you with me?

I read the article but -- perhaps because it was medically or chiropractically focused?-- I didn't see substantial mention of two really simple things I've observed help posture.
#1) Everyone I know that regularly does some kind of exercise that concerns balance and moving (this could be anything from yoga to dancing to boxing) tends to stand up straighter and look better upright. I recall once when a friend started yoga we actually measured her increase in height over a couple of weeks. It was that quick. I think this kind of thing is going to do a lot more for you than adjusting your chair at the office.
2) However, if you do want to adjust something at the office, my experience is that using an exercise ball as your chair makes a huge difference. It forces you to bounce and constantly adust your spine. It feels good. It's exercise for your abs and your back -- in fact the first day will WEAR YOU OUT, but you'll soon get used to it. And it only costs like 20 bucks... no need to get a zillion dollar chair.
In fact I'm bouncing right now...

Bottleman, you are completly right. I noticed an almost instant improvement in my posture once I took up yoga and pilates. And I've used an exercise ball at work -- it is tough to sit on that thing all day, but worth it.
Thanks for the feedback!
