Avoiding the holiday season weight gain

This past weekend, I celebrated my birthday in a decadent fashion, complete with lots and lots of food and not one, not two, but three birthday cakes (it was a big party.) For me, my birthday kicks off for me what this article calls the "feasting season." This week alone, two different friends who couldn't make it to the birthday bash are taking me out for lunch, next week is Halloween and another family member's birthday, the week after that I have a wedding and after that the Christmas party season begins. You get the picture -- lots of social events means lots of chances to over-indulge.
So how can we keep our waistlines in the endless jungle of rum balls, eggnog and other amazingly rich treats? The article has a number of tips and reminds us to keep in mind that holidays are about family, not food. As for me, I plan on keeping physically active throughout the season, and while I'm not one to turn down dessert, I'll try to enjoy everything in moderation. What about you?
