How many calories ... in a Fabe's all-natural carrot cake?

Categories: How Many Calories?, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements

["How Many Calories" is a regular feature that reveals the surprising calorie content in various foods. Thought-provoking, indeed. We're always on the lookout for surprising calorie counts, so let us know what you're finding and we may blog about it!]

Fabe's All-Natural Bakery promotes health food choices and health living. Their baked goods have no refined sugars and no trans-fats, but does "healthy" mean that it's good for you? Take a guess at how many calories are in one serving (5.75-oz) of their six-inch round sugar-free carrot cake:

(a) 165 calories, 0g fat
(b) 255 calories, 4.5g fat
(c) 422 calories, 12.7g fat
(d) 610 calories, 42g fat

And to any of you who are thinking of looking up the answer, there's no need. Just click below to find out the truth behind this unassuming treat.

Answer: (d) 610 calories, 42g fat

Not only does one small slice of the cake have 60% of the day's fat content, but it has almost 100% of the maximum for saturated fat (19g) and 25% of the maximum amount of cholesterol (80mg). For perspective, a 5.75-oz serving (163 grams) is the equivalent of almost three Snicker's bars and you'd get only 100 more calories, less fat and more protein if you ate that instead of the cake.

That just goes to show that you can't focus on one aspect of a food's offerings (sugar-free vs. fat-free vs...). You've got to consider it as a whole. This is a definite case of not getting to have your cake and eat it, too!
